Feelings. Thoughts. Unknowns.

the journey to being found in fernweh.

Hi Folks!

My name is Kourtney (she/her) and welcome to Found in Fernweh. This website is a longtime coming and here we are, two years into the pandemic where this thought was created, and nothing has come about it. I have scoured all over the place looking for what direction I would like to go, just knowing one thing, it's a journey being found in fernweh.

Beginning the Journey

Many of the thoughts I had about this journey were all over the place. Writing is not my strong suit.... I practically failed all levels of reading and writing classes I have taken, and somehow managed to write a master's thesis. (which I would dub a major failure, but that's a story for another day). So, here I am...writing a blog!

I once was listening to a morning coffee talk with Glennon Doyle and someone had asked her, how do you know you wanted to be a writer. She gave the most amazing answer that has stuck with me through my constant ups and downs about this topic. Glennon said, and this is a paraphrase, if you've thought about writing you are ahead of the people that have never thought about writing, so write. I never enjoyed writing, but guess what, I love talking and writing can be a form of expressing what I want to talk about. So, look out, a podcast might be in my future, too.

In 2020 the great covid pandemic started and I was a few years deep in my career of outdoor programming in Higher Education. After jumping to my third, and so far last, university I was struggling with my work. I had spent the last few years developing some of the most amazing relationships with my students, meanwhile I was finding limited connections with my co-workers and bosses. The strain of fighting with higher ups about my work was starting to take a toll on my mental health. In 2021, I decided to quit. With no plan. No job. Nothing.

Let's go on a journey through fernweh.
